Daryl Schrader Sensei
Daryl Schrader holds the rank of 5th degree black belt in
Aikido. He has studied several styles of Okinawan, Chinese,
Japanese and Korean Karate. In addition, he is well versed
in the throwing arts of Aikido, Jujitsu and Judo. The study
of Iaido, the wooden sword and the jo has helped to sharpen
his training. With over a half dozen black belts to his credit
and having studied under several grandmasters he is one of
the most versatile and qualified martial artists in the Tampa
Bay area. He taught beginning and advanced credit Karate courses
at St. Petersburg Junior College and Tae Kwon Do at the University
of South Florida. He presently teaches Iaido and Aikido at
the Jihonjuku Aikido Academy as well as Aikido at the Sarasota
Aikikai. Daryl Schrader began his study of martial arts
in 1963. Taking his first Aikido lesson from Koichi Tohei
in 1967. He then became one of the first personal students
of Mitsugi Saotome Sensei when he came to Sarasota in the
mid seventies. Sensei Schrader first studied Karate with Mark
Smith in the 60's, Yung Ho in the 70's and is presently under
Mike Hancock. Sensei Schrader's rankings include:
- 5th dan in Aikido under Saotome Sensei
- 9th dan in Shorin Ryu Karate under Mike Hancock
- 5th dan Ken Shin Kan Shorin Ryu Karate
- 6th dan Kokusai Shinmei-ryu Iai-jutsu Renmei
- 7th dan Sintoyoshin ryu Jiu Jitsu
- 4th dan Tae Kwon Do
- 4th dan Kempo
- Awarded the title Hanshi in karate
Sensei Schrader is Professor
of Astronomy & Mathematics at St. Petersburg College where
he has worked since 1977. In addition he has been an Adjunct
in the Mathematics Department and Astronomy program at the
University
of South Florida since the early 70's. He also does the monthly
astronomy column for the St. Petersburg Times.
Sensei Schrader has been married to his wife Jayne since 1983.
He has a daughter, Christy, who holds a shodan (black belt)
in Aikido. Daryl, Jayne and Christy have several American Eskimo
